# Questions about your yard

Mowing, watering, trees, fences and clearing, answered plainly.

## Getting started

### How do I get a quote from Hall Environmental?

Call or text Andrew, send the quote request form, or use the [Yard Planner](https://hallenviro.com/yard-planner/) to send a plan of everything the yard needs. You know the price before work starts.

### Do you work outside Winter Haven?

Yes. The service area is Polk County, including Lakeland, Auburndale, Davenport, Bartow, Lake Wales and the towns in between.

## [Lawn care](https://hallenviro.com/lawn-care/)

### How often should a lawn be mowed in Winter Haven?

In the growing season most Polk County lawns need [weekly mowing](https://hallenviro.com/lawn-care/), because Florida grass grows fast from spring through the rainy months. When growth slows in the cooler months, the schedule can stretch out.

### How short should my St. Augustine grass be cut?

UF/IFAS guidance puts most St. Augustine lawns at about 3.5 to 4 inches, and never more than a third of the blade at once. Cutting too short invites weeds and stress.

### Do you take one-time cuts for overgrown yards?

Yes. Tell us how tall it is and send a photo if you can. Very overgrown lots may be better handled as [land clearing](https://hallenviro.com/land-clearing/) first.

## [Irrigation](https://hallenviro.com/irrigation/)

### Why does my lawn have dry spots even though the sprinklers run?

Usually a head is broken, blocked, buried or spraying the wrong way, or the zone has mismatched nozzles. Running each zone and watching it shows the cause quickly.

### Do I need a rain sensor on my sprinkler system?

Florida law requires automatic sprinkler systems to have a working rain sensor or similar shut-off device. It stops the system from running after rain.

### Which days can I water in Winter Haven?

Watering days are set by your city or county and can change during dry spells. Check your utility’s current rules, and we will set your controller to match.

## [Landscaping](https://hallenviro.com/landscaping/)

### What plants do well in Winter Haven yards?

Plants suited to Central Florida sun, sandy soil and summer rain. The UF/IFAS Florida-Friendly [Landscaping](https://hallenviro.com/landscaping/) program has plant guides, and we pick plants for the exact spot they go in.

### How thick should mulch be?

Florida-friendly guidance is about two to three inches, kept back from tree trunks and plant stems so they do not stay wet.

### Can you redo just the front of the house?

Yes. A front-bed refresh is one of the most common jobs, and it makes the biggest difference from the street.

## [Tree work](https://hallenviro.com/tree-service/)

### Should palms get a hurricane cut?

No. UF/IFAS advises against removing green fronds, because palms need them. Trimming should take dead and hanging fronds and seed stalks only.

### When is the best time to trim trees in Florida?

Any time for dead or dangerous limbs, and ideally before hurricane season, which runs from June through November.

### Do you clean up after tree work?

Yes. Limbs and debris are hauled off and the yard is cleaned up before we leave.

## [Fencing](https://hallenviro.com/fencing/)

### Do I need a permit for a fence in Polk County?

It depends on where you live. Check your city or Polk County and your homeowners association for height and permit rules before a [new fence](https://hallenviro.com/fencing/) goes up.

### Can you fix my fence instead of replacing it?

Often, yes. Leaning sections, broken boards and sagging gates can usually be repaired. If most posts are failing, replacing it is the better spend.

### What kinds of fences do you install?

All four common types: wood, vinyl, chain link and aluminum. The right one depends on what it is for, whether that is privacy, pets, a pool or a border.

## [Land clearing](https://hallenviro.com/land-clearing/)

### What does land clearing include?

Brush, vines, palmetto, small trees and debris cleared and hauled away. How far it goes depends on what the land is for next.

### Do I need a permit to clear my land?

Sometimes, especially near protected trees, wetlands or lake edges. Those rules come from your city or Polk County, and they get checked before work starts.

### Can you clear just a fence line?

Yes. Opening up a fence line or one back corner is a common small clearing job.
